Few organisations look past the purchase price when looking for a new or replacement access control systems. But price alone is not an accurate measure to the true cost of the installed system.

The quoted price will often include only equipment and the labour to install it, but often excludes the cost of providing mains power and data cable.

To arrive at the true final cost, you should take into account all the following:

• Cost of equipment
• Cost of installation time
• Cost of hiring external disciplines
• Cost of fitting mains power outlets
• Cost of installing data cable
• Cost of maintenance overheads
• Cost of future upgrades
• Running energy costs

To illustrate our progress in reducing lifetime costs we compare two systems:

• Borer FUSION System is designed to work over the corporate LAN using TCP/IP (Internet Protocol). Each door is individually connected using a CAT5e data cable directly to a central Midspan Bridge device. Using Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, both power and data are delivered over the CAT5e cable thereby eliminating the need to install a power supply at every door.

• Typical industry standard (Legacy System) uses traditional architecture which connects a chain of access doors to the LAN via an Ethernet to RS485 data converter. A data cable is run from one door to the next in a daisy chain style. Main power outlets are required at every door to power the reader. In addition a metal wall box to house a power supply, battery pack and door controller is mounted at each door. Cables are installed to connect electric locks, card reader heads, etc. back to the control box.
