The Borer FUSION Smart Card Reader now supports Legic Cards, by reading the Legic Card Serial Number. This allows existing users of Legic Cards with Borer Smart Card Readers to migrate to ISO standard DESFire or Smart Cards without replacing the card reader head.

The change-over can be seamless as the FUSION Reader can be set to read both Legic and DESFire/Smartcards, only switching off the Legic reading capability when the card changeover is complete.

The Borer FUSION Smartcard reader works with open format cards which, unlike systems that use proprietary and exclusive formats, eliminates single supplier dependence and benefits the user with lower cost for replacement cards

The FUSION Smartcard reader supports industry standard (ISO 14443A and B - Mifare and DESfire, ISO 15693) technologies where a single card can be used for a range of applications including: access control, attendance recording, travel card and cashless vending. Firmware updates are automatically downloaded directly to the reader head over the LAN enabling new smart card standards to be supported as they are introduced.

The reader maintains a large local database with a memory capacity of up to 120,000 card holders/transactions enabling access decisions to be made at the reader head. This eliminates the need for a separate control panel, wall box and power supply reducing component count, bespoke cabling requirements and installation complexity and the associated costs. All cardholder details held in the reader’s memory are heavily encrypted to prevent manipulation or misuse of data.

The FUSION Smartcard Reader with Borer’s Eight Port Midspan Bridge device uses 'Power over Ethernet' (PoE) technology. This delivers both 'Safe Power' and 'Secure Data' over CAT5e cable directly to access controlled doors. A single Borer Midspan Bridge can support up to eight complete door sets consisting of 'In and Out' card readers, two magnetic locks and door alarm. These can be reliably powered over a single CAT5 cable, eliminating the need to install a power supply and mains outlet at every door.

The Borer reader is energy efficient when compared with alternative door access systems which typically consume in excess of 50 watts to control a single door equipped with a fail safe electrical release. Compare this with the 3-6 Watts required by a Borer intelligent reader and electric release combination using Borer’s 'Power over Ethernet' technology.
